The Search For Truth – Gun Control in the United States

dollars” (Results of the New Australian Gun Laws). Not only did the owners turn over their weapons they were also required to pay for to be destroyed through their taxes. The total expenses amounted to 34 million dollars for the Australians to destroy their own guns. Since then the statistics of crime have risen immensely. Homicide rates are up 300%, Assaults are up 8.6%! From 1910 up until 1996 Australia only saw rates at 1.8% as far as homicide went. Think about that for a minute, 300%. That’s an increase of over 166 times what it was before guns were removed from society. Australia also saw a rise in armed robbery of 44%. And rightly so, what do the burglars and robbers have to fear? There is absolutely nothing to stop them. People have no power on their own and by the time the police arrive they will be long gone. Can you imagine what the United States would look like versus Australia? There are 21,007,310 people living in Australia and an approximated 303,824,640 in the United States. If Australia’s crime rate rose to 300% that number could double or triple for the United States. If anything, the results of the argument over gun control can be seen through other countries such as this one. Why would the people of our country want to potentially put themselves in more danger if they could avoid conflict all together? Understanding that we all want a perfect peaceful place to live where everyone gets along and sees eye to eye is just unrealistic. There are people out there looking to hurt others or steal as much as they can. Guns in our society are one of the few protection methods we actually possess.
Through the purpose of the second amendment we can understand the true right to owning and possessing firearms. Through those firearms we exercise our right to protect our families, homes, and well being. This could be from something as big as protection from our own government or as small as an intrusion of a home. While there are people that feel guns are not entirely necessary due to the unfortunate acts committed by some; they miss the underlying elements and true purposes due to there situational emotions. Although the statistics of gun violence may out way the benefit of weaponry to some, without them, the situations we face would become far worse. People of unfortunate events such as the shootings or any of the stories mentioned above deserve all the sympathy and mourning people are able to give, however it does not give them a right to take our rights away. Gun control or removal is not the answer to every problem or situation we may face as a country.
